VIETNAM AGRICULTURE OVERVIEW

The agriculture industry contributes around 20 percent to the GDP while employing 40 percent of the working population in Vietnam.

Vietnam has grown to become the world’s fifth largest exporter of agro-food commodities including aquatic products, rice, coffee, tea, cashews, black pepper, rubber, and cassava.

At present, Vietnam consumes about 11 million tons of fertilizer each year (2016 survey), of which more than 90% is chemical fertilizers, and organic fertilizer only accounts for approximately 1 million tons. On average, every hectare cultivated in Vietnam absorbs more than 1 tone of chemical fertilizer each year, a high level compared to other countries in the region.

The number of machines now used in the agriculture sector has increased very quickly over the last decade. The demand for modern agricultural machinery to support a closed value chain is continually on the rise.

Seventy per cent of agricultural machinery in Vietnam is imported from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China, while domestic manufacturers provide just 15 to 20 per cent.
